Horizon Zero Dawn is a Brand new IP of Guerilla Games and is a PS4 exclusive. It is Guerilla Game’s first take to open world genre. The game has already sold 2.6 million copies, as a matter of fact it is the Best Selling New IP for Sony and Guerilla Games. This feat says enough about Horizon Zero Dawn.
Horizon Zero Dawn is a technical and graphical masterpiece which restored my long lost love for post-apocalyptic games. It not only feels refreshing but gets you hooked after playing a couple of hours.
This was Guerilla Games’s first dive into the RPG Genre, but they executed it brilliantly. Horizon Zero Dawn is a beautiful game from the moment it starts and till the final mission. Nowadays every post-apocalyptic game is the same. Every post-apocalyptic game puts you in a universe where the world is destroyed(mostly by a virus) and there are zombies everywhere and you have to escape death and find a way to cure the virus. I am not criticizing zombie games, of course there is this masterpiece ” The Last Of Us” which is why many of us have a PS4 or PS3. I am just saying that this genre has been saturated. This is where Horizon Zero Dawn comes in like a cool breeze and gives you a refreshing feeling. This is a post-apocalyptic game but with a twist it contains machines animals(more like machine dinosaurs).
Horizon Zero Dawn starts off with the story of young Aloy who is the female protagonist of the game. She and her father Rost are the Nora tribe’s outcasts. One day while venturing into unknown territories young Aloy falls into a ruin where she finds a modern device known as the “Focus” from where everything begins. I especially liked the first few hours of the story which shows a coming of age story of Aloy. Your motive in this game is to find out about who your mother is and how the world became what it is today.
Horizon Zero Dawn’s effortlessly combines modern and primal worlds. The world is overrun by robotic dinosaurs and humanity has withdrawn into small settlements or tribes. There are different tribes such as Nora,Carja etc. The game thrives on amazing story telling, beautiful landscapes and an unforgettable hunting experience. From the start, Aloy sets to find out why the world is as it is. In the process, she hunts and dodges a world infested with robotic dinosaurs.
When you enter the game the first thing that you spot is the graphics. The game is beautifully made and is one the most best looking games on PS4 and is on par or better than Uncharted 4 graphics wise. There is also a dedicated photo mode inbuilt into the game which lets you take amazing photos to keep or share with your friends.
The story of this game is also very immersive. At first Aloy is just an orphan who wants only one thing, getting accepted into the tribe. But as the story progresses she starts on a journey to find who her mother was and how the world came into ruins. The writing is excellent in this game. There are also a lot of options when speaking with a NPC. She transforms in so many ways throughout her journey, and it’s amazing to look back when all is said and done, reflecting on not just the awesome challenges you’ve overcome, but also on how much confidence and maturity Aloy’s gained in the process.
The combat is Horizon Zero Dawn is Fluid and simple but difficult to master. You can mix and match perks and abilities to create your own play style.
The story is great no doubt but what got me hooked on this game was the combat. Horizon Zero Dawn’s combat is fresh and innovative. At first the machines may be easy to kill but when you get to later parts of the game and face Giant monsters it is a blast. There are a lot of ways to fight in Horizon Zero Dawn. The preferred way is stealth if you are playing on hard mode (if you are a hardcore gamer like me) but if you just wanna enjoy the game you can go with easy mode. Aloy has a wide range of weapons at her disposal like bows, spear, traps etc. Dodge-rolling is an important part of combat. The combat is a bit similar to Witcher 3 where you have to use a lot of dodging and use skills to defeat the enemy.
Horizon Zero Dawn keeps the combat interesting by adding different machine into the mix. Every machine has different weak points, strengths, affinity etc. So you need to come prepared with a lot of stuff. Some machines even drop heavy weapons when you sever a part of their weapon system. For example when you shoot the laser weapon of the Ravager it drops that part which you can later use to clear out the competition. Crafting also plays a important role in combat. Some machines are weak to fire, ice, electricity so you have to craft arrows, traps of that element. you have to hunt machines, animals and harvest plants to get the crafting materials.
There are a lot of Dungeons which you are likely to miss if you focus on the main story and don’t do some exploration. These dungeons are some of the best parts of the game. At the heart of this dungeons there is a hidden power which allows you to “override” different kinds of machines. Nothing feels better than watching a machine battle for you and do half of your work. There are some dungeons also which grant you high-level gear such as the “shield-weaver outfit” which is only available if you complete a set of quests in a dungeon.
For the completionists there are a lot of collectibles to find. There are metal flowers, ancient vessels, banuk figures etc. As for the side quests and errands there are a lot of them. If you are a Trophy collector like me ( don’t know why i am hooked on those trophies) then u need to do every side quest to get the Hidden trophies. There are a lot of other things to do in Horizon Zero Dawn so i will leave it for you guys to discover. You can also check out Every thing you need to know about Horizon Zero Dawn before buying here.
Horizon Zero Dawn is a must have for PS4 owners. I genuinely enjoyed playing this game even though i don’t like the post-apocalyptic genre. This game has components everyone can enjoy. It keeps the combat fluid, simple and innovative.
